Justice Beyond Borders?

Exploring new pathways to accountability for human rights violations against migrants crossing the Mediterranean

For decades, Europe has been scaling up efforts to control irregular migration, in particular through agreements with partnering states and involvement of private actors. These policies raise serious concerns about safeguarding human rights, as well as complex legal questions regarding accountability and responsibility for those involved.

As the number of migrant boats crossing the Mediterranean is once again increasing, this seminar explores the range of accountability efforts relating to the situation for migrants and refugees in Libya. Providing a concrete point of departure, Marwa Mohamed will talk about the Lawyers for Justice in Libya (LFJL) ongoing litigation efforts to protect migrant rights.

The talk will be followed by a panel discussing the practical and theoretical implications of these efforts for legal developments and accountability in both Europe, Africa, and the United Nations.
