Negotiating Mobility: The Role of Lawmakers and Self-Legitimation Practices in the Andean Migration Statute
Presenter: Paula Nimbriotis Manzur is an Ecuadorian PhD Candidate in Law and International Relations at Universidad de Nebrija, where she is a researcher at the Global Nebrija Chair in Migrations and Human Rights. Her research focuses on free movement regimes in the Global South, particularly within the Andean Community (CAN).
Presentation: In this presentation, Paula will introduce her thesis project “Negotiating Mobility: The Role of Lawmakers and Self-Legitimation Practices in the Andean Migration Statute”. The project focuses on the Decision 878, also known as Andean Migration Statute, as an illustrative case of the law-making process in the Andean Community (CAN). The presentation will cover the general introduction, mapping of actors and timeline addressed by the thesis, as well as the initial results gathered after the first round of fieldwork for this doctoral thesis. The research puzzle will be discussed under the lenses of interdisciplinary approaches of International Law, International Relations and Migration Studies. She intends to empirically, examine policy-making within a less-known case in the Global South and, theoretically, revise and potentially build new theory regarding Free Movement Regimes and Global Governance Institutions. In particular, the thesis will focus on exploring the self-legitimation practices within a two-level approach: 1) external, by considering the overlapping regimes and 2) internal, with the mapping of organs influencing the law-making process.
