How states use human rights law to advance their migration control interests

Presenter: Dr. Janna Wessels is an associate professor at the Amsterdam Centre for Migration and Refugee Law (ACMRL), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Presentation: Janna Wessels is a leading expert on the intersection of human rights and migration law, currently heading two major research projects: "Who is Empowered by Strasbourg? Migrants and States before the ECtHR" and "Countering human rights from within: Framing State interests in human rights language in migration-related jurisprudence." Her research critically examines how states use human rights law to advance their migration control interests, often by reshaping its meaning within migration-related jurisprudence. During her visit to MOBILE, she will continue her work on reverse strategic litigation by governments, exploring how states manipulate legal frameworks to serve their own migration policies.
