NordAId secures NordForsk funding for AI in public decision-making
NordAId: Trustworthy AI in Public Decision Making, a research project co-led by MOBILE’s director Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen, has been awarded 16 million NOK (1.35 million EUR) in funding from NordForsk.
Focusing on asylum decisions, NordAId seeks to identify the limits and benefits of AI-based decision-making. The project builds on a Nordic-Baltic dataset of nearly one million asylum decisions. Its aim is to develop an interdisciplinary meta-framework for trustworthy AI and to support more responsible use of AI in case-based public decision-making.
The consortium spans researchers from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Lithuania, representing universities in Uppsala, Vilnius, Oslo and Copenhagen. Participants from the University of Copenhagen include Associate Professor Naja Møller, Professor Thomas Moeslund and Associate Professor William Byrne. The project will run from 2026 through 2029.
NordForsk’s call for projects supporting the responsible and ethical use of AI attracted 200 eligible proposals. Only 17 projects – including NordAId – were ultimately selected for funding.
