Asst Prof William Hamilton Byrne awarded prestigious John H. Jackson Prize
Assistant Prof William Hamilton Byrne has been awarded the annual John H. Jackson Prize for his article, ‘The Influence of Legal Scholars on the Development of International Investment Law’, published in the Journal of International Economic Law (JIEL).
The article explores how legal academics shape international investment law. By analysing citation patterns in legal decisions and conducting interviews with top arbitrators, Prof Hamilton Byrne demonstrates how scholarly ideas influence the resolution of investment disputes, especially when defining what counts as a protected investment. The article also raises ethical questions about academics serving both as neutral arbitrators and authors of legal commentary.
The JIEL John H. Jackson prize is awarded in recognition of work that significantly breaks new ground and adds fresh insights to the study and understanding of international economic law. Over the past decade, the prize has honoured the legacy of Prof John H. Jackson, founding editor of the JIEL, and is considered the journal’s highest distinction. The winner receives £750 in Oxford University Press books.
