Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen interviewed for Uniavisen on AI and Asylum Law

How can artificial intelligence help strengthen legal certainty in asylum decisions—without replacing human judgment?
That’s the focus of a new research project led by Professor of Law Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen from the Faculty of Law and the Nordic Asylum Law and Data Lab.
In a recent interview with Uniavisen, Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen discusses the project Explainable Artificial Intelligence and Credibility in Asylum Decision-making, developed in collaboration with Professor Thomas Moeslund (Aalborg University).
Supported by a DKK 12 million grant from the Villum Foundation, the project aims to build a transparent AI model that can identify bias and improve fairness in asylum case assessments.
The research draws on a unique dataset of over 800,000 asylum decisions from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—made possible through strong Nordic collaboration.
